In our session on August 1st, Dr. Harpe and Dr. Simpson will be presenting on the challenges and need for colleges and universities to undertake comprehensive pay equity studies to examine the fairness of their compensation practices.   Institutions of higher education are not immune to the greater scrutiny given these days to employers’ compensation practices. Pay equity studies are designed to understand group’s pay differences, identify any factors that explain pay differences, and help manage litigation risk.  But undertaking pay equity studies is difficult when the workforce comprises academic professionals, tenure-track versus contract faculty, and staff employees subject to or exempt from state personnel acts. During this session, you will learn about the challenges of constructing a pay equity study for a college or university, how to prepare for such a study and what issues to consider if pay equity adjustments are needed.  Many of these same elements are very relevant to pay equity studies performed in other industries.
