Keynote Speakers

Benjamin Mee
Zoo owner and author of “We bought a Zoo”

“We Bought a Zoo”

Benjamin shares his emotive story of courage, resilience and enterprise. When he and his family learned that the dilapidated  Dartmoor Zoo would be closed down and the majority of the animals destroyed  if a buyer couldn’t be found, he defied all odds and bought it.

Benjamin possesses an unwavering passion for transforming lives through knowledge, collaboration and partnership, and encouraging sustainability through shared practice in the context of conservation. Despite a rather strained relationship with the education system in his youth, Benjamin went on to study Psychology at UCL and then went on to complete an MSc in Science Journalism at Imperial College.

He was a contributing editor to Men’s Health and a columnist at Guardian before he moved to Southern France and began writing a book on the Evolution of Humour in Man and Animals. He was recently awarded an honorary doctorate in science from Plymouth University and has had a lifelong interest in the field of animal intelligence.

About ZSL London Zoo

In the heart of London, on the north side of Regent's Park, is London Zoo. When the Zoo opened in 1828 it housed a collection of exotic animals that were studied by eminent scientists of the day. Only later, in 1847, did the Zoo open its doors to the public, and, from then on it became the most famous zoo in the world.

Among many world firsts, the Zoo opened the first reptile house (1849), the first public aquarium (1853), insect house (1881) and children's zoo (1938). Today the Zoo looks after 650 animal species, of which 112 species are listed as threatened in the Red Data books, and participates in breeding programmes for 146 species. It's the perfect day out for the whole family.

Land of the Lions opened in late 2015 and is ZSL London Zoo’s newest and most breath-taking exhibit transports visitors from the heart of London to India’s vibrant Sasan Gir, where they can get closer than ever before to mighty Asiatic lions.

The zoo allows visitors to get closer their favourite animals, learn about them at the keeper talks and watch them show off their skills at our daily events. By visiting London Zoo, visitors help ZSL to protect endangered species, conserve natural habitats and bring learning to life for all ages.

Penguin Beach recreates a South American beach landscape in the heart of London, with stunning colony of Humboldt penguins (and one special rockhopper). The new exhibit features a large pool with stunning underwater viewing areas so you can see how our flippered friends fly under water. The exhibit’s 1200 sq metre pool holds 450,000 litres of water!
