Dr. David Rock Presented on the Brain Science behind Performance at PeopleFluent Global User Conference WISDOM 2015
Director Dr. David Rock of the NeuroLeadership Institute Opened the Conference with a Keynote Discussion on the Neurological Science that Guides Performance
WALTHAM, Mass. – March 10, 2015 – PeopleFluent®, a leading human capital management technology company, today announced discussion highlights from the company’s global user conference WISDOM 2015 keynote session “The Brain Science behind Performance,” featuring Director Dr. David Rock at the NeuroLeadership Institute. Rock presented on the neurological research behind developing talent and encouraging performance. His presentation focused on the steps companies can take to get employees to embrace a “growth mindset,” which makes them more receptive to learning opportunities, such as feedback and stretch goals.
“It turns out neuroplasticity works, but only if you believe it will,” said Rock, explaining the power of having a growth mindset, “it’s about your belief in potential to change.” For the professional talent management audience, he went on to elaborate on how to build a growth mindset in others, including the idea of simply adding the word “yet” to critical feedback, to imply that growth and skill-building was likely in the future. He also shared the observation that individuals given less growth-oriented feedback statements – relating to their innate talent, rather than effort and persistence – were 300 percent more likely to cheat on assignments. “We are easily primed,” Rock told the audience, “do you want people to trying to prove themselves or trying to improve themselves?”
Dr. David Rock coined the term ‘Neuroleadership’ and is the Director of the NeuroLeadership Institute, a global initiative bringing neuroscientists and leadership experts together to build a new science for leadership development. Rock co-edits the NeuroLeadership Journal and heads up the annual global summit. He is the author of the business best seller ‘Your Brain at Work’ (HarperBusiness, 2009), as well as ‘Quiet Leadership’ (Harper Collins, 2006) and the textbook ‘Coaching with the Brain in Mind’ (Wiley & Sons, 2009). Rock is also on the faculty and advisory board of CIMBA, an international business school based in Europe, and a guest lecturer at many universities including Oxford University¹s Said Business School.
