The Four Cs of Continuous Collaborative Learning

Given the competitive benefits created by continuous collaborative learning, it’s easy to understand why performance-driven enterprises are devoting greater resources and attention to it. If your organization wants to reap those benefits, consider the “Four Cs” below: 1) Creation, 2) Content, 3) Connection, and 4) Community. They reflect the experiences and best practices of enterprise organizations globally.

1. Creation— Encourage employees at every level, in every role and in every functional area to create content and share their knowledge freely. The more supportive you are, the more responsive employees can be in meeting the enterprise’s goals and helping each other solve problems in real time.

2. Content—The content itself should take on a variety of forms and formats, both traditional and nontraditional, e.g., guidebooks and manuals, slide presentations, videos, blog posts, webinars, podcasts, etc. Make sure developed content is “share-worthy.”

3. Connection—Digital devices are essential to maintaining anytime/ anywhere connection. With basic smartphones and tablets, employees have greater freedom and ability to stay in touch with teammates, co-workers and managers at the office, conduct research online, upload reports, contribute to online group collaborations.

4. Community— Today’s communities are groups of individuals who share similar interests, needs or objectives—and they gather together in the same virtual space from a limitless number of physical locations. Ensure that your enterprise is open to an array of communication and knowledge sharing channels, including external networks like Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, SlideShare, Twitter and others—as well as internal networks, communities and workspaces. Many individuals already behave this way in the “wild,” promoting and sharing content internally and externally. And don’t simply “allow” employees to connect with these sources. Encourage them to connect. Encourage connections with internal sources (peers, teammates, project managers, middle management, senior leaders) as well as external ones (subject matter experts, business partners, industry bloggers and influencers).

At the end of the day, there’s really no way to become a performance-driven enterprise without continuous collaborative learning. Continuous collaborative learning gives your people the self-paced activities to improve their skills and knowledge they need to excel in their current roles. It also will help them prepare for future roles and responsibilities, even leadership positions.

Like our own companies today, learning itself continues to evolve. If we don’t keep pace with it and the needs of our workforce, we won’t just fall behind our competition. We’ll be the ones who get crushed.
